Foreword to the English Edition
I had the chance, together with Bonnie Litschewski Paulson and Stanley L. Paulson, to compare their translation of my book, line for line, with the German text. The exercise splendidly confirmed the notion that translation is essentially interpretation. At many points, thanks to their formulations, I was belter able to understand my book than when I drafted it. Our discussions occasionally led to questions that could not be resolved through mere interpretation, and I have altered the text accordingly. In each case, the reader is of course alerted to the alteration.
My thanks to the translators for all their effort cannot be overstated.
