Foreword
This book, written during a research semester, stems from a project of Ralf Dreier’s and mine aimed at a short monograph on the general outlines of legal theory. Because the present work outgrew the scope of the single chapter envisaged in our joint project.
I decided to publish it separately. For their encouragement. I wish to thank both Ernesto Garzon Valdes and Meinolf Wewel. And I extend special thanks to Ralf Dreier. whose long-standing influence can be seen in everything I have written here.
