Online resources

Bills currently before Parliament, and details of their progress through Parliament, can be accessed through www.parliament.uk/business/bills-and-legislation. The texts of Public General Acts (from 1801), Local Acts (from 1852) and UK Statutory Instruments (from 1948) are available at www.legislation.gov.uk (which also includes Explanatory Notes for statutes resulting from Bills introduced into Parliament from November 1998).

This site also includes legislation passed by the Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales and the Northern Ireland Assembly. Its contents are updated to incorporate the effect of repeals and other amendments. However, the editorial process results in delays, which may cause the texts, as published, to be less than totally accurate. Several online subscription services, such as the LexisNexis Butterworths Legislation Direct and Westlaw UK’s United Kingdom Law in Force, also provide amended and annotated statutes.
