Introduction

The effective operation of the system of binding precedent (which we mentioned briefly in Chapter 2 and will consider more fully in Chapter 7) depends on the availability of reliable reports of the courts’ decisions. However, before giving any further consideration to law reports, it will be useful to consider how cases are named.
