The provenance of all translations used in this work is provided in square brackets at the end of each passage. In most cases, these references are to books which may be located in the bibliography, with the exception of (a) those translations which are my own and are labelled as such and (b) those deriving from a set of Handouts used to teach Roman law at the University of Edinburgh.
