PREFACE TO THE SIXTH EDITION
For the sixth edition of this popular textbook, I have acted largely on advice from external reviewers of the fifth edition. Additional references to primary sources and to secondary literature (books and articles) have been integrated into the text to act as a guide for further inquiry.
As in the previous editions, I have attempted to engage with the latest Italian, German, and French scholarship on the topics covered in this textbook. This has been done, largely with the aim to aid students in their reading, by focusing on books and articles published in English in which continental scholarship is discussed. As in the previous editions, 1 have not attempted to cite every contribution on the topic. Rather, I have limited the reading to a few important works that may act as a guide to further research. Although in its current state, this book falls somewhere between an elementary textbook and a manual (in the Italian style), I hope that it will be of use to many students (whether undergraduate or postgraduate) of Roman law.In summary, the major developments for this edition are as follows:
• The text has been refined (e.g. in relation to property and obligations) and updated (e.g. in relation to time periods) to reflect current scholarly opinions.
• References to important new research (e.g. a number of new Handbooks and Companions) have been included to enable students and course lecturers to follow the most recent developments in the field.
• The accompanying website has been reworked (e.g. in relation to multiple choice as well as essay questions) to ensure greater interaction between the text and the online material.
