Watch Your Drug Consumption

As a follow-up to the previous paragraph, watch your consumption. Don't let your usage become a crutch, or even worse, an addiction. You will likely be invited to many events early in your career that will involve alcohol and potentially other substances.

Moderation is your friend here. And if you aren't a consumer, that is totally cool! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Jason will tell you that his COVID find was the world of non-alcoholic beers. Honestly, they rate about 85% to 90% as good as real beers for those times he wants to avoid alcohol.

One key point here: if you are out with a client, don't for a minute think you can do everything your client does. If your client is drinking heavily or doing drugs, don't think because they are consuming that you can, too. Whatever they do, we'd highly recommend doing a lot less of or abstaining entirely. The tales we know of where a lawyer was fired by a client who says, “I can't believe they did that around me. They are supposed to be my lawyer,” are numerous. And many times, the client was the person egging the lawyer on.

There are a lot of lawyers who struggle with this. Beware of how you are coping and don't fall down this trap.
