Introduction

Mauritius became a British possession in 1810 and remained as such until achieving independence in 1968. The research at hand is concerned with a particular period in Mauritian history: British colonial rule during the 19th century.

As previously indicated, the study focuses primarily on two processes: slavery and indentured labour. The purpose of this chapter is to outline the broader history of Mauritius and the context in which the abolition of slavery and the introduction of indentured labour must be understood. The ambit of this section is purposefully limited to general points only, with a detailed discussion of issues reserved for the relevant chapters. The following therefore traces the early history of Mauritius before providing a brief overview of the sugar industry which acted as the engine which drove the political economy of the island during the 19th century. The chapter concludes with an outline of important events of the 20th and 21st century which, while not examined in detail in this study, inform of the island's current trajectory.
