Acknowledgments

The Asian Law and Society Reader is inspired by our experiences of conducting law and society research in Asia and teaching it in undergraduate and graduate classrooms for decades.

Throughout our professional lives, the three of us have been fortunate to have been involved in the Law & Society Association (LSA) and, from its inception in 2016, the Asian Law & Society Association (ALSA). Both the LSA and ALSA have provided invaluable settings in which to present our research, learn about the scholarship of our counterparts around the world, and share our teaching experiences. This book crystallizes many of the lessons and fruitful discussions that we have had with students, friends, and colleagues, who have enriched our intellectual lives.

We are grateful to the research assistants who contributed to this project at various stages: Wen Weiyang, Jeanette Yeo, and Umika Sharma at the National University of Singapore (NUS); Xie Yihui at Yale-NUS College; Yang Keyi at the State University of New York at Buffalo; and Gihad Nasr at the University of Toronto. We are indebted to NUS Law for housing the project, which is supported by the Ministry of Education, Singapore, under its Academic Research Fund - Tier 2 (MOE2018-T2-1-101) - and Wendy Wee for her tireless help with all things related to the research budget. In addition, we are thankful for the supplementary funding provided by the JY Pillay Global Asia Programme (WBS C-607-003-098-001) at Yale-NUS College and an ad hoc grant provided by the Centre for Asian Legal Studies at NUS Law.

Above all, we wish to thank our own mentors and teachers, who introduced us to the joys and wonders of conducting law and society research.
