ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

This volume has its origin in a conference held at the British School in Rome, the Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut Rome, and the American Academy in Rome in September 2012. The conference was sponsored by a number of institutions: the Helen Kellogg Institute for International Studies and Nanovic Institute, University of Notre Dame; the Center for the Study of Ancient Religions, University of Chicago; the Faculty of Arts, Radboud University; the Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut Rome; and the Loeb Classical Library Foundation, Harvard University.

To those institutions, and our hosts in Rome, I am most grateful. The writing of the Introduction and the editing of the papers was conducted at the American Academy in Rome and the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften, Frankfurt. For their hospitality, my thanks.

A number of people assisted with the planning and running of the conference, as well as preparation of this volume: Ruth Abbey and Olivier Hekster aided in the application for funds and joined us in Rome; Anne McGinness helped with logistics; and David Nirenberg and Greg Woolf participated throughout and provided commentary at the close. The event was likewise improved by the presence of Annabel Brett, who in the end was unable to contribute a paper.

Sabine MacCormack played a role in the initial design of the project and was to contribute a paper on citizenship and belonging in the Siete Partidas. Her death in June 2012 deprived the conference of her participation and this volume of a paper, and many of us of a treasured friend.

Throughout this project, I have benefitted from conversation with three friends whose presence may not be immediately apparent: Jennifer Pitts and Patrick Weil, neither of whom could participate but whose learning has left traces throughout; and Ruth, who makes me smarter.
