Have an Identity Outside of Being a Lawyer

In our experience, people who are “just lawyers” never separate from their jobs. It's unhealthy and also makes you boring at cocktail parties. It's not about having hobbies (also important and discussed later), rather identifying as something other than a lawyer.

Ideally, this identification isn't just internal, it's important for others to see you as someone other than a lawyer as well. Some examples include spouse, parent, musician, author, sommelier, chef, competitive badminton player, mountain climber, or newly minted yoga instructor.

Whatever it is, find something you take pride in outside of being a lawyer. This balance is essential. In our experience, having another identity will make you more appealing as a lawyer, as clients are always looking for well-rounded people who have a multitude of experiences and interests.
