Social science research, especially qualitative research, is reflexive.

The pro­cess of understanding our research subjects is also a process of understanding ourselves as a researcher. During the course of fieldwork, Asian law and society scholars often have to navigate their own identities, who they are in relation to the research site and the people whom they set out to study. Are they insiders or outsiders? What are the challenges of being an insider or outsider?
