The technology described above can be used in two ways. In its more basic form, technology automates processes that once required significant human effort.

Typewriters replaced handwriting, and later word processors replaced typewriters. This kind of technology has (only) incremental value to lawyers. The change to work brought about by this technology is not radical but will transform the work of lawyers in many different ways.

But sometimes technology does more than (just) automate; sometimes it innovates. This occurs when technology creates a completely new way of handling the same task, even though the actual impact might be small in the beginning. In the words of Clayton Christensen, author of the book Innovators Dilemma, LegalTech might not be sustaining but disruptive. Most LegalTech tools used in practice fall into the improvement category. LegalTech tools help lawyers to render a certain task faster and more efficient, with higher quality and fewer costs, compared to performing the task manually.

There are, however, several LegalTech tools that will challenge and completely change the way in which certain legal services are delivered. Collectively, they will transform the entire legal landscape. In what follows, we will briefly describe a selection of these tools and their use cases. Other tools which will not be described in detail include knowledge management, e-learning, online legal guidance, legal open-sourcing, workflow, case and project management, and contract management.
